Steel City celebrations gain momentum

forthcoming events
from May 2008

As the date for South Yorkshire Pride - Sheffield 08 draws closer - Saturday 7th June - the Pride committee are already enjoying the excitement and buzz that is being generated around the city. They have been working tirelessly with some of the biggest and most established names on the Sheffield scene to get the support and help of all the major gay and gay-friendly businesses and venues.

In particular the committee have been working in conjunction with both Ra Ra Ra and Climax - the two biggest monthly gay nights in Sheffield - to organise ‘Pride special’ events.

Over the past months South Yorkshire Pride has invited members of the community to ‘strut their stuff’ in a number of Pride Idol events, where heat winners will perform on the main stage in the live grand final.

March’s heat took place in Dempsey’s where the wide array of talent left the judges stumped and produced not one but two winners.

A similar event was held at Climax, leaving the judges with yet more tough decisions to make.

The penultimate heat is to be held at Club Xes on Friday 23rd, so don’t miss it!

Fundraising efforts continue as ‘gay speed dating’ is back and returns to Ha Ha bar - for women on Thursday 22nd May and Monday 19th May for men.

‘It’s great to see Sheffield’s gay community working together to make South Yorkshire Pride successful,’ says Simon Palsraman from Club Xes. ‘We hope to build on this and help generate an annual Pride event to be proud of.’

The day itself is set to be memorable, having already booked and confirmed a plethora of acts for the main stage including Axe Kid, a pop punk electro band, Christine Moon, a Sheffield-based lesbian comedienne, and a brand new boy band Vigo amongst many others.

There’s also a women’s performance area, dance tent, stalls, a beer tent and talk of a massive ‘Pride bar crawl’ in the city.

‘We are so excited about South Yorkshire Pride,’ says Sandra Baker from the Pride committee. ‘It’s been hard work but we would like to thank all the venues, individuals and businesses that have given their time and support. There’s much more to do, but we can already see the event taking shape!’

If you would like to volunteer on the day, or find out any information about the acts performing please visit the South Yorkshire Pride website.
