Tricia Walker wrote Benedict’s Brother in 1999 after she inherited some money in her uncle’s will. She travelled half way round the world to the brother she hadn’t seen for years, inspiring her to write the story, which centres on a woman who discovers her uncle’s past as a Japanese prisoner of war and meets her long lost brother who is now a Buddhist Monk in Thailand. Boats, bridges and motorbikes are recurring themes in the story, and Benedict’s brother’s dream is to ride a Harley-Davidson across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
The story didn’t find a publisher when it was originally written and last year, Walker decided to launch it as a blog.
‘The book is written as a diary, and I realised that it was perfectly suited to the blog format,’ says Walker, 43, from York. ‘So I created one in my character Benedict’s name, and updated the diary entries every other week.’
The blog was an instant success, generating readers from as far afield as Canada, the USA and Malaysia, many of whom were impatient for each new entry.
‘Others said that they wanted to read it in a book, so I knew I ought to find a publisher. I had an ideal contact in my sister Sarah Smelik who runs Coppice Publishing. She agreed to publish it.’
The official launch is at Borders in Davygate, York, on May 3rd from 6pm-8pm.
