on the scene from May 2007
Wakefield’s gay scene has seen a few upheavals and changes over the past year or two - and there’s more to come!
Wakefield Pride suprised everyone by being a fantastic day - complete with parade - that showed the rest of Yorkshire how to do it; Downtown turned into Club DNA - and then closed - but is soon to reopen as Odyssey; and the owners of Huddersfield’s The New Union decided to open a similarly-named sister pub in Wakey.
Situated around the back of Morrison’s, at first you might think it was a slightly odd place for a gay bar - but it works perfectly: easy to get to, lots of parking, and it’s just a short walk from Bar Zeus and Odyssey.
The atmosphere inside is great - down, mainly, to the fun, lively music played by DJ Marky Mark. The venue itself is bright and airy and open, with plenty of seating space, a great dance floor and (of course, considering the pub’s popularity with dykes) a pool table.
Add in quiz nights, karaoke a great range of food and cheery doorstaff and you’ve got an absolute winner! Wakefield’s gay scene continues to go from strength to strength.
