That’s the slogan for a brand new Leeds Pride event to be held in the centre of Leeds’ ‘gay village’ this year, for the first time.
Outline plans have been unveiled for a massive lgbt Pride in the centre of Leeds and negotiations are well advanced for the fencing off of most of Lower Briggate for what promises to be Yorkshire’s party of the year.
‘The event, to take place on Sunday August 6th, will be focused around a main-stage,’ says Tom Doyle, Director of Yorkshire MESMAC, one of the main organisers of this year’s event, ‘boasting the cream of local and national talent. Complimentary events will be co-ordinated and hosted by local gay venues throughout the day and on into the early hours. ‘As well as great music, dance, street performance and comedy there will be a chance to browse in the market area where numerous stalls will be plying their trade. Local charities, groups and statutory services will be hosted in the community arena where you will be able to get everything from health check-ups to information on housing and Civil Partnerships.’
A group of local gay businesses, including bars, shops, saunas and media outlets have committed themselves to raise the money needed to kick-start Leeds Pride. They plan for 50% of profits to be invested in next year’s event with the other 50% going to Yorkshire MESMAC’s group of services including Leeds LGB Switchboard.
Mark Sharratt from Queens Court said: ‘Its been brilliant, all the venues and businesses are supporting Leeds Pride, which will be fantastic.’
Phil from The Bridge Inn agreed: ‘We will be working with all the venues to make sure the day is a success, that everyone has a great day and that we raise loads of money for a great gay charity.’
‘There’s been a real buzz of excitement about Leeds Pride,’ said Doyle. ‘We’ve been bowled over by the support shown by local venues and services. Many of them, like The New Penny and The Basement Complex, are putting on special events to raise money to support Leeds Pride.’
The team behind Leeds Pride wants to get people involved and is keen to hear from you if you have any skills that you think might be of use in planning, marketing and funding the event, or if you just want to help on the day.
