It may be that The Tenth Muse is 'on the border' so to speak, nestling in the delightful Calderdale town of Todmorden. This 'straight-friendly' cafe bar has, over recent years, become a firm favourite before you leave the cosy confines of Yorkshire and enter the land of the red roses!
A former electrical shop, The Tenth Muse first opened its vibrant purple doors in December 2000. Owners Jo Turton and Cheryl Stovin named their venture after Sappho - apparently Plato nicknamed her ‘The Tenth Muse’ due to her poetry and girl’s school on Lesbos, which just happens to be a favourite holiday place for long term partners Jo and Cheryl.
The Muse is one of those places where you can sit, relax and unwind and if you’re feeling a little peckish, their extensive menu boasts both continental and traditional dishes with daily specials.
As a regular patron, I can vouch that the food is very definitely home and hand made, using local produce where possible, fair trade and free range eggs and chicken.
If you really need some Dutch courage - especially if you are heading further west to good old Lancashire - you may want to sample the extensive selection of import bottled beers such as Budvar and Tusker as well as Lindeboom on tap. They also stock locally-brewed beers or if you fancy something a little lighter try the excellent wine menu!
Food and fare aside, The Muse also hold its very own Tight night on the last Sunday of each month. Introduced by bar manager - and artist - Chris Furminger in September 2003, these exciting themed evenings have become extremely popular and have included a 70s, beach party, and a Madonna and skool disco evening. With a free supper, quizzes, party games and the ever popular ‘pervert bingo’, Tight is something not to be missed!
And in case you were thinking that nothingmuch happens in Todmorden, here are some fascinating facts for you: The Muse can count the 1996 Mr Gay UK winner Roy Fairbrass, amongst its former staff; Cheryl Stovin, co-owner, became Lady Mayoress of Todmorden for 2006/7; The Muse has its own ghost - The Woman in Black; regular customers include Emmerdale cast members, famous musicians and well known actors.
Like any self respecting lgbt venue, keeping ahead with change is essential, and The Muse is closed until March 8th for a major refurbishment - including a new larger bar area and increased lounge seating downstairs. Upstairs will become the main dining room/restaurant, although they will continue with their dog friendly policy downstairs.
So, with new décor, including murals, hand-made mirrors and gay-themed artwork and the grand re-opening, next time you’re in Tod, why not stay awhile. Should you be served by a Lady in Black, chances are she will be happy to provide the ‘spirits’ menu!
