For a city of its size, Wakefield’s gay scene has shown a remarkable amount of change and growth over the past couple of years: not only was it the first Yorkshire city to put on a proper Pride parade, two years ago, but its thriving gay scene shows what can happen when bar and club owners really throw themselves into it.
The days of Downtown and DNA are gone and Wakefield’s newest gay club has arrived - and the name is Odyssey.
‘With an extensive refurb, this place has style and panache,’ they tell us, ‘new lighting, new sound system - a whole new look. At last a club which Wakefield deserves!’
With a new look comes new faces, in the shape of drag DJ Miss Orry. Famous for her days at The Birdcage in Leeds and Funny Girls in Blackpool, she’s now settling down and giving the big smoke the big heave-ho: ‘Her legendary DJ performances will make Odyssey the hottest club in town so come down and join in the fun partying till the early hours. And before visiting Odyssey, why not get the night started in Bar Zeus with resident DJ Miss Connie Lingus spinning out the tunes with her acid wit and charm - and pick up a flyer for free entry into Odyssey. Mangement and staff from both venues hope to see you all soon - friends both old and new!’
Whilst the layout of the club is much the same as before, it all looks much brighter, newer and cosier. Nigel and Rick, the club’s owners, have had a bit of an uphill struggle to get Odyssey open but it’s been worth the wait - and with the acid-tongued Miss Orry on DJ and customer-heckling duties, there’s a real sense of fun about the place.
The refurb continues apace, with plans to turn the back bar into a snug little pool room, and late licences are in the pipeline, so Wakefieldites who previously headed off to Leeds or Manchester can look forward to playing at home, rather than away!
