Bradford raises flag

The International Day Against Homophobia, now in its third year, with over 50 countries throughout the world taking part, was inspired by the French lgbt campaigner Louis George Tin who has successfully campaigned for the day to be recognised by the European Parliament. On 17th May, Bradford Council together with the Equity Partnership raised two rainbow flags outside City Hall.

Paul Hunt, Chairperson of the council’s LGB Employee Focus Group told us: ‘We can lend our voice as a collective community in condemnation of those 77 countries who still continue to punish women, men and children because of their sexuality. Today’s special day affords a platform for everyone to make a powerful statement to demand improvements for people’s quality of life overseas and here in the UK. Being lgbt isn’t the only defining factor for this group of individuals as many are defined and pigeon-holed because of their gender, race, ethnicity, disability or age as well as their sexuality.’
