Mark Carter - Mr Gay UK - opened Bradford’s new Equity Open Access Café last month. The new venture run by the city’s Equity Partnership is a social space for lesbians, gay men and bisexuals and is open every Tuesday from 5-8pm.
Rachael Nauwelaerts told Shout!: ‘We are hoping to provide what the different communities want, for example, films, alternative therapies, speakers etc. We want people to come to the café and let us know what they want to see happening during the café times. Both a book exchange and the DVD/films etc are part of the Equity Open Access Café, although there is no reason why if someone wants to take a book at a different time, they can’t do so! ‘
Mark Carter who officially opened the first evening told Shout! that he was proud to have been invited to the opening and that he hoped the venture would be success.
Despite the fact that Carter, as part of his duties as Mr Gay UK, is heading for Italy for a photo shoot and later this year Gran Canaria, said he hoped the café would develop into a positive space where the lgb community could network and afford support in an inclusive welcoming environment. Following the first night Nauwelaerts spoke to Shout! and said that whilst the evening was a huge success, there was a distinct lack of women, so come on girls, give it a try!
