Proud as a peacock

on the scene
from July 2008

What is smart, sexy, sophisticated, sumptuous and stylish, can get you tipsy whilst laughing yer bits off, and have you dancing and-a-swaying all at once? A date with me? Hmm, possibly…. Belinda O'Hooley in concert? Maybe,.

Ahem…. no darlings, I'm talking about Huddersfield's latest arrival brought to you by Russ and Caroline, the owners of cool hangout Sleepers, please welcome - the Peacock Lounge, offering the cream of live music, jazz, burlesque and comedy. Her ladyship and I were invited along to its recent opening, which of course we accepted (it would be rude not to).

Some may say we’d turn up at the opening of a handbag, it’s all true! We decided to make an effort for this opulent occasion: for a change, we slipped into baggy jeans, flat shoes, me in a dykey t-shirt, with the missus in a khaki combat shirt she’d sourced from her favourite charity shop, a smidgen of Dax, a squirt of aftershave and we were good to go! We arrived to find we had got the outfits a little wrong that evening, as everyone else was in either nicely tailored suits and dickie bows, or cocktail dresses, stockings, stilettos and feather boas. However, after a few glasses of bubbly - we ceased to care and got on with enjoying the glamorous surroundings; black walls adorned with erotic artwork, chairs padded with black velvet and candle-lit tables, the attention to detail is incredible, reminding me of some of Dublin’s classy bars. The well-stocked bar, lit by chandelier light, serves anything from Asahi on draught, to bottled Flying Dog, from Kir Royal to Pimms and lemonade, and for a special occasion, such as your three-month anniversary, or cat’s birthday, why not sample a glass or three of vintage Brut?

Cinema classics such as Moulin Rouge and Breakfast at Tiffany's were our entertainment for the evening - the Peacock Lounge will be hosting regular film nights, providing a variety of independent films - for which I hear they will take suggestions… hmmm, how about Desert Hearts, or the entire back catalogue of Ellen?

And they will be presenting the very best stand-up comedy acts from around the world, as well as fabulous drag acts, Cabaret Heaven, plus diverse and eclectic music nights featuring blues bands, swing and even 90’s Britpop icons - Dodgy!

Yes chaps and chappesses, ‘Uddersfield is going up in the world. This glorious venue is welcoming of all sexual preferences - so get out of those elasticated fleecy bottoms, get into your gladrags and take a peek (oh dear) at the Peacock Lounge.
