Over 4,000 people from across Yorkshire descended on Cemetery Park in Sheffield last month to celebrate the city's first ever Pride event - South Yorkshire Pride 2008.
‘It was amazing to see the gay community come together, to raise awareness of lgbt issues,' said Sandra Baker, ‘to celebrate that in this country we can be “proud” to be as different or as gay as we like! It's an important step to see Sheffield host its first Pride event and shows that people had been crying out for an event like this for some time.'
The event itself ran smoothly, with only a hint of the old British weather threatening to spoil the day, spirits remained high and the sun shone through to the end. An eclectic mix of bands on the main stage kept the majority interested for the day with local performers such as Anja Bach and Sheffield's gay choir Out Aloud performing seamlessly with nationally recognised acts from Axe Kid to Random Pam while The Irwin Mitchell Community Tent provided something a little different with a dance and Indian head massage classes and even a drag king/queen workshop.
‘The committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make South Yorkshire Pride the success it was,’ said Darren Hopkinson from the Pride committee. ‘In particular we would like to thank South Yorkshire Police, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and Irwin Mitchell, without whom the event would never have been possible. A big thank you also goes out to all the acts who performed on the day and all the people behind the scenes who made the day what it was.’
And there's already talk of Sheffield's first ever Pride march next year. If you would like to take part in next year's event, please contact the committee through its website.
