The Brunswick Centre is involved with an lgbt housing project in Huddersfield. Sadeh Lok housing had a small block of flats in Huddersfield town centre that had become vacant due to problems with the student lets in the recent past, and after several meetings with Sadeh Lok, Brunswick Centre agreed to a partnership where these flats would be allocated for the exclusive use of members of the lgbt community who were referred to Sadeh Lok. Part of the partnership means that MSM at the Brunswick Centre will focus on the emotional and support needs of residents while Sadeh Lok will look after any housing issues.
‘The nine flats are now fully occupied,' they tell us, ‘mainly by young lgbt people. Many of them can be at risk entering sex work through being homeless, and, many young people when they come out often face hostility from family and friends. This has provided excellent safe accommodation for those most in need.'
Through fund-raising, the Brunswick Centre has now furnished all the flats with new cookers and fridge freezers. The project has also been supported by other partner organisations including Connexions, West Yorkshire Police, HAGG (Halifax Area Gay Group) and GALIC (Gay and Lesbian Youth in Calderdale and Kirklees). It’s believed to be the first of its kind in the north of England - if not the whole of England.
