Fringe benefits for footballers

off the scene
from July 2007

Yorkshire’s lesbian entertainers have been drafted in by Kirklees Ladies Football Club to help keep them on the pitch.

The cash-strapped club will receive all the profits from the Lady Fringe concert taking place as part of the Pink Picnic celebrations this month. The Huddersfield-based ladies - mostly lesbian - almost folded at the end of last season when they found themselves almost £2000 in debt due to the dishonesty of an ex-player. They were forced to play their home games in Bradford after Kirklees Council sent back bounced cheques, while club officials were threatened with bailiffs as bank charges mounted.

‘We didn’t think we’d survive to play another season,’ said player-manager Debbie Tomlinson. ‘The prospect of going under has been hanging over our heads for months. Thankfully, we’re not running scared of the bailiffs anymore, but we’re still desperately in need of funds.’

Despite their difficulties, KLFC still managed to finish as runners-up in the West Riding Premier League and are already favourites for next season’s title. To ensure they still have a club next season, Kirklees have now teamed up with the organisers of the Pink Picnic to help stage the Lady Fringe at the Lawrence Batley Threatre on July 28th.

Local comedy act Clitty Rubquick will be joined by Yorkshire singer-songwriters Fasciani and Jess Gardham for an evening’s entertainment in the theatre’s cellar bar.

Tickets are £8.50 and are on sale from the theatre box office or from Huddersfield bars The New Union and Nefertiti’s.
