Out at Work

in the news
from February 2007

Out at Work is a 15-minute animated DVD designed to introduce the new law giving equal rights to lesbian, gay and bisexual people at work - the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation, Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003.

Leeds Animation Workshop, the non-profit-making co-operative that produced the DVD, has been making film and video resources for nearly 30 years on social issues including equality, harassment and family problems. Suitable for groups or individuals, it’s ideal for screening in workplaces, training courses or meetings, to employees, employers, and the public. ‘It helps to get the message across about the new equality rights for lesbians, gays and bisexuals at work - what they are, why we need them, and why they are a good thing. Out at Work, narrated by Finetime Fontayne and Sally Phillips, tells six stories, in different workplaces including a hospital, a garage, a school, a kitchen and an office. The workers - three women and three men - are at different stages of their working and personal lives. The stories show the issues for a lesbian, gay or bisexual person at work: going for an interview, starting a new job, dealing with coming out, what happens when your partner gets ill - what it feels like on your own, and when you get some support.’

The pack has been sent to every Citizens Advice Bureau, so that it will be available to advisors and clients all over the country. It has also been distributed nationwide through the TUC Equality Department. It is now available for sale or hire on a non-profit basis for colleges, training organisations, employers, and anyone concerned with equality at work.

It’s available from Leeds Animation Workshop at £40 (half-price for Leeds organisations). Contact details below.
