Celebrating queer history in Yorkshire
forthcoming events
from February 2006

South Yorkshire is celebrating LGBT History Month in February - in style! - with events in Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham. Rennie Brown LGBT Coordinator with South Yorkshire Police told us: ‘These events are aimed at celebrating the changes and contribution lgbt people make to society locally and nationally and raising the profile of lgbt past, present and future as well as providing information with displays by local organisations and groups of their work on lgbt and diversity. We are encouraging everyone to take part in these prestigious events - they are a really important tool in gaining information and awareness and raising the profile of lgbts as part of South Yorkshire’s Community.’

Doncaster - Tuesday 14th February 10am-3pm, Doncaster Mansion House, High Street.

Making their own local lgbt history for the second time by raising the rainbow flag above the Mansion House at 10am to open the event. Throughout the day there will be guest speakers, workshops on various topics, with displays from local groups and organisations. There will be interactive activities by lgbt youth and other groups, which will include singing, poetry, Asian dancing, street-dance as well as accounts of personal experiences. Free refreshments will be available.

Rotherham - Friday 17th February 10am-6pm, Rotherham Central Library and Arts Centre, Walker Place.

Displays will be on show throughout the day with free food and refreshments.

Sheffield - Friday 24th February 10am-3pm, Sheffield Town Hall.

Throughout the day there will be high-profile speakers and workshops on various topics. Displays from local organisations and groups showing the work and projects being done within Sheffield to raise the profile of lgbt and celebrate the positive changes over the years. Free refreshments will be available.

‘Please show your support and attend your local event,’ adds Brown. ‘You never know who you might meet, what information you may get and more importantly what changes you can make by getting involved.

All the events have been organised by local organisations and lgbt groups working in partnership to make South Yorkshire a safer place for the lgbt community to live, work and socialise.
