Wakefield Pride - 'different from the rest'

Wakefield Pride is quietly working away to provide a Pride festival with a difference. The event will take place, as usual, in Wakefield Cathedral precinct on Sunday August 10th, just up the road from The Rainbow, Bar Zeus and Odyssey and a spit away from The New Union.

‘The main stage line-up is still being finalised,’ they tell us, ‘but in a departure from the norm, Pride not Prejudice have booked Ti Amero, a classical pop/opera group of who will be belting out anything from Pavarotti to Pink. They will be joined by local singers and bands hosted by the fabulous Miss Blanche and MarkyMark.

‘In the weeks leading up to Pride there will be the usual five-a-side football tournament and the pool tournament. The winners will be presented with their trophies on the main stage on Sunday 10th August by the Mayor. Entry forms and rules are available from The Rainbow, Bar Zeus and New Union where the pool tournament will take place.’

The event and main-stage activities will be officially opened at 2pm, outside the cathedral, by The Mayor of Wakefield, and there will be the usual stalls and information stalls.

The New Union will have an open-air stage with a variety of entertainments throughout the evening.

Bar Zeus are holding a Eurovision-themed evening with a headline act and will be hosted by the inimitable Madam Connie presenting a selection of funky music.

Club Odyssey will throw open its doors and entertainment will be provided all day. The group are still working on a project which, if it comes together will be another first for the innovative award winning group. Details are still shrouded in mystery so if you want to see what they have planned you will have to go down to the precinct on Sunday August 10th starting 1.30pm. See the advert in this issue for full details.
