Stay healthy in the steam
health news
from August 2008

Yorkshire MESMAC staff have been working in The Steam Complex in Leeds for six months.

‘Sauna users can get free hepatitis B vaccinations and chlamydia/ gonorrhoea testing without having to fit in a visit to the sexual health clinic or MESMAC offices. All we need is a sample of your wee so that we can prepare it for chlamydia/gonorrhoea testing and send it off. Both those STIs are easily picked up and usually you wouldn’t even know you’ve got it. You get the results back within two weeks by post or phone call.

‘Each hepatitis B vaccination builds up your body’s resistance so three injections taken a week or two apart will make your body immune to it for a year. It is safe for people who have a weak immune system as it’s a synthetic vaccine. People who have hepatitis B may not show any symptoms, however you may get a flu-like illness with jaundice, vomiting and abdominal pain.’

Yorkshire MESMAC workers are in the Steam complex on: Saturday 16th August from 6pm-10pm, and Saturday 23rd August, 6th September and 20th September from 6pm-11pm.

‘We’re not the condom police,’ they add, ‘but we are here to help you look after yourself so just ask us about your free tests and vaccination.
